Nakilat-SvitzerWijsmuller has signed a 22 year contract for 21 vessels with Qatar Petroleum (QP).
Nakilat-SvitzerWijsmuller is the new joint venture company set-up by SvitzerWijsmuller and Qatar Gas Transport Company (Nakilat). The company will provide a wide spread of marine services including towage, escorting and mooring services to visiting vessels in Ras Laffan Industrial Port and offshore Qatar.
For the last 10 years, SvitzerWijsmuller has been successfully providing these services by means of 4 tugboats and 3 mooring-launches, but due to the scheduled developments in the Port of Ras Laffan, a large increase in support vessels is required in the future. In the subsequent international tender, QP awarded the Nakilat-SvitzerWijsmuller partnership the contract.
Nakilat-SvitzerWijsmuller will own and operate a fleet consisting of 4 x 80 tbp escort/harbour tugs, 6 x 60 tbp escort/harbour tugs, 6 mooring launches, 2 offshore line-handling boats, 2 pilot vessels, and 1 support maintenance boat. All these vessels are purposely designed and build for this contract. In addition to that, the existing vessels operating in Ras Laffan Port will remain in operation as well, accumulating to a total support fleet of 21 vessels.
The contract is to commence 15th November 2006 with delivery of the first new vessels in November 2007. The vessels will be built in the Middle East, Europe and the Far East at reputable yards where SvitzerWijsmuller has been executing its extensive new build program over recent years.
Mr. Daan Koornneef, Managing Director for the SvitzerWijsmuller Middle East says “We see this as a great recognition and appreciation by QP of our achievements over the last 10 years. We feel we have built a solid relationship with QP over this period based on mutual professionalism and trust. We are honoured that this effort has been awarded by QP with this contract which is the largest of its kind in the world.
We are also very pleased that we have found a new solid and renowned partner in Qatar Gas Transport Company (Nakilat) whom we look forward to working together with in providing first class marine services at a first class port. Our track record shows that we will never compromise on safety and that we are committed in providing our clients with effective and highly efficient marine services”.
