During the late evening of September 30th the refrigerated cargo vessel ICE FLOWERS was drifting on the North Sea, after having suffered a main engine failure. The vessel drifted towards one of the offshore platforms in the area which therefore was partly evacuated by the Dutch Coastguard. SVITZER Salvage was contracted under a Lloyds Open Form to pick up the immobilized vessel and bring her to a safe port. The SVITZER Salvage tug WAKER, a 120 ton BP ocean going tug, had already been proceeding towards the casualty from the first notice. At 03.34 hours on the 1st of October the crew onboard of the WAKER was able to connect up to the casualty. The casualty was ultimately delivered off Den Helder where she was taken over by the salvage station tug SVITZER MARKEN which had been mobilised in from IJmuiden. This was necessary in order to be able to control the tow while proceeding through the narrow approaches to Den Helder in bad weather conditions. The same evening the casualty was redelivered upon having safely been moored alongside in Den Helder.
