The bunkerbarge SAVINOSA sank on the 10th of September while alongside in the port of Tarragona spilling some of its cargo of Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) and Gasoil (GO). Immediate action was taken by the owners and Spanish authorities to control the spill and attempt to refloat the vessel. On the 16th of September SVITZER Salvage was requested to attend to assist in the operations, resulting in a team consisting amongst others of a Salvage Master and a Naval Architect being send in the same day. The next day, following a number of changes in the original plan, SVITZER Salvage obtained permission to complete the operations and a day later, following the result of further calculations, the project started in earnest. Some adjustments were made to already executed preparations for safety and operational reasons. Over the weekend of the 20th/21st of September, using external lifting force-, regaining buoyancy- and oilcargo discharge- techniques, the vessel was successfully refloated. On Monday the 22nd of September the team was released having completed its tasks.
